For love of a courtesan, the Egyptian physician Sinuhe sold himself into slavery. He will live an odyssey halfway between myth and reality. A physician, but also a spy for Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, he will travel from Thebes to Babylon, as well as to the mysterious Hittites and the Cretans subjugated by the Minotaur.
A prodigious adventure novel that introduces us to the politics, religion, and sciences of the fourteenth century BC, the masterpiece by the great Finnish writer Mika Waltari also invites us to reflect on contemporary man, pleasure, freedom, power, violence, injustice, and everything that shapes our destiny.
In the fourteenth century BC, here is the extraordinary Sinuhe. We follow him through the alleys of Thebes, the dissolute city, to the terrible courtesan Nefernefer who ruins him, in the temple of Amun among the priests, to the pharaoh whose physician he is, among the embalmers among the corpses, to war against the Hittites, in Crete in the labyrinth of the Minotaur where he seeks a young virgin…
Religious struggles during Akhenaten's time, crimes, loves, ambitions, intrigues… Sinuhe, weary of the gods and disgusted by men, mixes with the common people and preaches equality, which brings him new misfortunes.
